The Diaries of Lady Anne Clifford

DJH Clifford (ed)

Sutton Publishing 2003   ISBN: 978 0 7509 3178 6

This is the most accessible version of her personal journals. It covers her early life in the Elizabethan court, her miserable marriages to the Earls of Dorset and Pembroke, and her eventual return to the North. It provides a rare, first-person look at a woman’s internal life and her sheer stubbornness in the face of 17th-century patriarchal pressure.

Anne Clifford's Biographical Writings

Jessica L Malay (ed)

Manchester University Press 2018   ISBN: 978 1 5261 1787 8

This collection of Anne's own writings dates from 1603 to 1676  and covers her memory of Elizabeth I's funeral, her life in London and her eventual move to Yorkshire. Her deep Christian faith beocmes clear in the way she describes her trust in God and in her use of Biblical references throughout.

The Will to Scuceed

Christine Rafaat

Unicorn Publishing 2020   ISBN: 978 1 912690 68 8

This is a vivid reimagining of Anne's life, filling in the gaps left by her diaries and is a beautifully written example of historical fiction.

Proud Northern Lady

Martin Holmes

Phillimore 1975  ISBN: 0 85033 255 7

Although now a little dated, this is the classic autobiography, carefully researched, accurate and detailed.
